The Type 36A and Type 36A Combat Model had their main guns replaced with 15cm guns, and the Z37, 38, and 39 were particularly heavily armed, equipped with twin 15cm turrets on the bow. In 1944, a measure to strengthen their anti-aircraft armament, known as the Barbara modification, was considered and gradually implemented. Despite being at a disadvantage against the German Navy, they fought bravely to the end against the powerful British fleet.
